  • Asheville area folks: Come on over to @forvillagers at 7 pm tonight to hear @gardenbetty talk about her new book,
  • When dinner is served al fresco on the patio, at sunset, in a watermelon bowl, then my heart smiles. || Egg noodles, NC shrimp and pea shoot-arugula-basil pesto topped with nasturtium leaves, sage flowers, and chive blossoms. Nearly summertime and the living is easy.
  • When your afternoon involves chilling inside the Asheville Salt Cave with 7 of your nearest and dearest and your collective 4 kiddos, and your night involves celebrating one of their birthday's with a fajita feast and @glennbenglish's phenomenal spring sangria (with watermelon and strawberries and honeysuckle blooms that I picked), then you know that today has been an extraordinarily good day.
  • Spicy pork dumplings from @ganshanstation, I love you. While everything I've tried here has been seriously stellar, @procain's dumpling situation is worth the visit alone. So, so good!
  • Here's what I did today: hopped in the car, drove about a mile over to Hominy Valley Organic Farm, and got down to strawberry-picking business. I filled a flat for $18 (at $3/pound). If you live in the area and are looking for delicious, organic, U-pick strawberries, come see Farmer Tom Monday-Friday after 2 pm. Tell him I sent ya! Now, on to jam, and Popsicles, and pie, and galette, and pickled strawberries, and more! ??????
  • Pretty much ANY time is a good time for pickles, especially now that I've added @foodinjars delicious Quick Pickled Strawberries to the mix. Sublime!
  • You're in my heart, you're in my soul.
  • A testament to the power of social media: saw @holedoughnuts post an image of their Buttermilk Cardamom Black Pepper donut this morning, ate lunch, and then made the 20 minute drive over to enjoy some in person with @glennbenglish and Huxley! Completely worth it. So, so good!!!
  • It's not a significant thing, nothing major. Just a walk down the driveway to gather the mail. But when I do it with Huxley, and we stop to say
  • Hominy Creek, doing its spring thang. || View from our mailbox.
  • Attended my first ever handmade/homemade swap yesterday, at a friend's sweet home in Black Mountain. SO much goodness, all thoughtfully and lovingly made. Huxley came with me and ran around with the kiddos while the swap took place. I contributed these little jars of rosemary honey, which @glennbenglish artfully topped with straw-blown watercolorings. Such a great afternoon with like-minded friends and fellow mamas! Thank you so, so much for hosting, Amanda!!!
  • Saturdays are for French toast on the porch with @glennbenglish and Huxley Wild while rain showers wash over the cove. || Used @farmandsparrow's Heritage Corn Bread and @oldworldlevain's Double Raisin & Flax Bread to make cardamom French toast, served alongside butter, maple syrup, and Hominy Valley Organic Farm strawberries, all washed down with hibiscus iced tea (our warm weather cold beverage go-to).

Weekend Review

IMG_5253IMG_5754IMG_5720IMG_5730
Happy Monday, friends! And Happy New Year’s Eve! I’m one of those ultra cautious folks that doesn’t like to be out on the roads this one particular evening of the year, so, after the tiny Englishman goes to sleep, I intend to park my rear on the couch beside my sweet spouse, sip something bubbly, and (hopefully) ring in the new year at midnight (if I can keep my peepers open that late; such an old lady I am-and talking like Yoda, it would appear…).

This weekend was pretty chill. I’m working on my next piece for Taproot, so much of Saturday was spent creating, testing, and photographing recipes for that. Yesterday I was able to spend some quality time with much-loved, not-seen-nearly-enough friends. Love those cozy, comfortable meet ups with my nearest and dearest.

Otherwise, here’s what happened, visually:

*Broke in Glenn’s panini grill, a holiday gift from yours truly. He whipped up reubens with a side of homemade pickles and hard cider. Best. Gift. Ever.
*Happened across mention, and a photo, of my “Keeping Chickens” book in the January issue of Better Homes & Gardens. I’ll take a surprise like that any day!
*Along with my usual monthly column in Verve, this month I was fortunate enough to be asked to pen the cover story. Then they went and made me the cover girl! (Locals can pick up a copy on newsstands now; for everyone else, my English Lessons piece and the food trends story aren’t up online yet-soon as they are, I’ll be sure to let you know).
*Exchanged some gifties yesterday with Nicole. Can’t wait to try them all out, including a homemade “Love” tea blend, a kaolin bergamot bath soak, and an infused vanilla, cardamom & cinnamon honey. YES!

Here’s wishing you a wonderful New Year. On the first day of 2012, Glenn and I woke up and spotted, from our bed, a double rainbow down in our lower field. We took this to be a rather auspicious omen. Don’t know that we’ll get to see that again, but, no matter. I’m convinced 2013 is going to be grand.

Also, New Year’s Day is the day of my very first date with my sweet man, back in 2007.  From that fateful dinner date, I walked into a life filled with love, creativity, and true partnership, and I make it a point to remember how blessed I am to have found such a P.I.C. (partner-in-crime for the uninitiated) each and every day.

Small measure family, may 2013 be your best year yet!!!

Love it! Have a great New Years! I’m with ya, not sure if I’m going to make it to midnight, but hanging out with hubby all evening is great none the less

Such huge congratulations on your cover story and “cover girl” status! I can’t wait to read the article. I’m also glad to see the mention in BH&G. I love your book!
Happy New Year to you and yours.

I saw that in BHG and wondered if you knew already – glad it was a happy surprise! :)

We’re going out tonight to a show at Jack of the Wood. I don’t know how I’ll stay awake but I figured it’s my last New Year’s Eve without having to find a sitter, so I better take advantage! Ten years ago today, Jon and I had our first date – hiking, lunch and then celebrating New Years, where he requested a kiss and I offered my cheek. He still reminds me of that every year. :)

    Happy New Years to you!

  • Hazel says:

Congratulations on having the cover of Verve ‘covered’, as it were! I look forward to reading it when it’s online.

Wishing you a very Happy New Year!

  • Katie says:

Ooh! Look at you, cover girl! So fun! Also, tell that PIC of yours to send a reuben my way. Happy New Year to your family!

  • Lauren says:

I purchased every one of your books for my husband for Christmas. I called him during his lunch break and asked what he was doing. His response, “walking on the track while reading about bees!” Here’s to another year with a terrific P.I.C!
