Portland Apothecary (+ Giveaway!!!)

Portland ApothecarySummer SharePortland Apothecary FlowersDouglas Fir SaltSummer ZodiacDesert and SalveHawthorneBlossomTea and SugarSummer Lake
There are some friendships that develop in a predictable fashion. You’re introduced to each other thru a mutual friend at a cocktail party, or meet at work, or take classes together in school or yoga or the like. You know, the usual. Other friendships, though, are a bit less routine in their origin, a bit more wily, a bit, well, digital. Such is the case in my friendship with Portland Apothecary co-owner and acupuncturist/herbalist Kristin Dilley.

I honestly can’t recall quite how our correspondence began. I think she’d commented on here, or sent me a direct email from the blog, or something along those lines. Whatever prompted that first introduction quickly morphed into an easy, comfortable conversation, with a shared love between us of the Twilight series (which I have no shame fully admitting I latched onto with fervent FERVENT enthusiasm), herbalism and botany, mysticism and lore, and all things Pacific northwest (where she lives and I aspire to spend more time in).

When we first *met*, Kristin was deep in the throes of acupuncture school, and was relocating from Seattle to Portland, Oregon. Fast forward to the present day and she’s the co-owner, along with Elie Barausky, of the genius concept that is Portland Apothecary. As they describe it on their website, we’ve all heard of community supported agriculture and local, seasonal foods, so how about applying that concept to health and wellness, via herbs? Portland Apothecary offers four seasonal shares of handcrafted items intended to keep you from getting sick come winter, spring, summer, and autumn. Teas, elixirs, tinctures, scrubs, soaps, facial toners, salves, salts, and so much more are created around seasonal needs.

I received a complimentary package of one of their Spring Shares last week, to gain a sense of what their Community Supported Herbalism seasonal shares are all about. All I can say is that I am smitten. SMITTEN. As in, can’t-get-enough-of-all-this-goodness smitten. From the Spring Equinox Mister to the Nourish Tea, each product is expertly blended, with lots of wisdom and passion and love tucked in. There’s even a pamphlet with seasonal notes and suggestions for seasonally-appropriate diet and exercise and ways of caring for your mind, too. The actual items in the share taste, smell, look, and feel simply wonderful. I’m finding myself inspired by them in a way that I haven’t felt in some time. It’s hard to fully convey-they’re just right, in every conceivable way, if that makes sense.

Well, friends. You’re in for a serious treat. Even though Kristin and I have never met, even though our friendship exists solely via these inter webs, and even though we don’t *know* each other in a corporeal way, she has ever so generously offered to give one lucky small measure reader an entire summer share! This is a $140 value, friends. Oh, happy, happy day! Included in the share, you’ll find:

** Blossom Tea: Linden Flowers, Rose Petals, Chamomile, Lemon Balm and hibiscus. This is a perfect blend for a sun infused tea that will help cool you down and bring calm into your heart. A beautiful and amazing smelling blend.

**Basil & Citrus Sugar Scrub: Keep your skin looking and feeling great with this rejuvenating blend. Good circulation is an important part of skin care and by using this scrub in a circular motion towards the heart it helps not only with your circulation, but also with lymphatic flow. A great and invigorating way to wake up in the morning.

**Pedicularis & California Poppy Extract: These two herbs will help you unwind and settle into the warm nights and long days of summer. Flower Essence blends will also be included to help ensure ultimate relaxation. This extract will make you feel like you just had the most perfect summer day.

**Rose, Calendula & Huckleberry Leaf Facial Toner: A reparative and gently astringent formula to balance and tone the skin. Pure lavender flower hydrosol is added for aromatherapeutic benefits and overall skin radiance. This toner is especially refreshing when kept in the refrigerator and soothing after a day in the sun.

**Douglas Fir Tip Infused Salt: The majestic beauty of Douglas Fir surrounds us here in the Pacific Northwest and its tips have a unique citrus flavor packed with Vitamin C. This salt is meant for pure enjoyment. Great on freshly picked heirloom tomatoes, as a finishing salt for grilled veggies or even on your watermelon slices. So good.

**Schizandra & Hawthorne Berry Elixir: Berries, honey and brandy are a favorite combination around here. Especially when they are as nutritive as this combination. Schizandra berry has all 5 flavors represented in its taste and in Traditional Chinese Medicine is seen as an ultimate tonic. Hawthorne Berry has a long standing tradition of being used as a heart tonic, both physically and emotionally. Some Flower Essences will appear in this elixir as well. Right now we’re thinking a borage flower essence made under the full moon for a little courage.

**Desert Soap: Ylang Ylang and Desert Sage transport you to the cooling air of the desert at night. Cold processed and moisturizing this soap has blue cornmeal to exfoliate and red clay to help detoxify and nourish the skin.

**All Purpose Salve with Comfrey & Calendula: for all kinds of summer scrapes, cuts, bug bites and rashes.

**Limited edition letterpress prints of the summer zodiac constellations by Fortress Letterpress. Individual 5×7 stunning prints.

How exciting, yes? YES! So, let’s get down to brass tacks, shall we? To enter the giveaway, please leave a comment below, saying why you’d like to win. AND, for even more chances to win, head over to Portland Apothecary’s Facebook and Instagram pages, “Like” their pages, and come back here leaving a comment telling me you’ve done so (you can leave individual comments for both your Facebook and Instagram “Likes”).

The contest will run for one week, ending next Wednesday June 26th, 2013. This giveaway is open to U.S. residents only. Please, please leave a means of contacting you in your comment should you be the winner. You can do this by either linking back to your own blog or website, or by leaving your email address in your reply. I’d hate for you to be the randomly selected winner, only to have no means of letting you know. You want this package, if you win, trust me. You want this package period.

Even if you don’t win, do check out Portland Apothecary and all they’ve got going on. The entire concept of seasonal community supported herbalism shares is so timely and sensible and, to the best of my knowledge, they’re the only folks doing such an endeavor.

Here’s to friendships, of every persuasion!!!

UPDATE 6/27/13: The giveaway is now closed. HUGE thanks to everyone who commented. I loved hearing your own love for Portland Apothecary! Congratulations to our winner, Stacey Lafayette. This summer share promises to be a good one!

Hello! Several years ago I gained a strong interest in herbalism. I do work around public health, equity and disparities and am continuously interested in ways to make herbal knowledge and remedies available and to foster our public knowledge so that everyone can access their healing power! Herbalism, which in many cultures was traditionally an accessible and integral part of community life and health is now something that is often available only to the middle and upper classes, for a variety of reasons. Let’s take back community herbalism! I believe that everyone deserves access to remedies and home and body products that connect them with the land and each other. I love the work of the ladies at Portland Apothecary. I’ve been following them on Facebook and Instagram for some time. I can’t afford a summer share and would be thrilled to be the lucky winner. Regardless, I will go on following them and supporting their amazing work until I am able to join the CSH regularly. Thanks to all of you for what you are doing. -Hannah

  • Lauren says:

Hi Ashley and other herb/health/design/good-stuff-loving people!

I am a recently licensed acupuncturist and would love to win this summer share! The work that portland apothecary puts into their products is so tangible and they not only have medical weight and information but they are fun! Their products help grow my interested in herbs and natural medicine, and also make me want to be in Portland (or at least closer to where they do their magic)

As a recent graduate/recently licensed, unfortunately I cannot always put my dollars where I want them. Hence a win for this amazing treat would be phenomenal!

    Happy Thursday!
    -Lauren

    Hello!

I visited Portland a few years ago and have been missing it ever since. I live on the East Coast and would love these wonderful reminders of the environment there. What a great concept – self care is something we all need to do more of and this CSA goes a long way to help us out!

Thank you so much for this generous offer, I also am now following their instagram and facebook pages (as Our Natural Heritage).

    Cheers!

She deprives herself of self care and gifts to herself because she is a mother of two without much money. These products can send ripples of positivity throughout an entire family if I am chosen as the winner ( fingers crossed).

Summer can be a very trying time for me, the heat and sun are emotionally draining on this water sign gal, and as much as I love being outside I tend to stick to my shady apartment during the height of the season (except when I’m lucky enough to score a secret campground spot along a lovely little river!) Anything that evokes green/desert nights/flowers is so restorative and refreshing when I feel strained. And, that salt looks like it could easily become my new bad habit.

I think their formula for community, beauty, seasonality and nourishment is so lovely, my favorite aspect of Portland Apothecary CSA is who they “curate” each season, naming the color, intention, and aspects of each new phase of the year. I have never used their products but was just recently introduced through a friend who bought their SPring share and loved it. I have recently finished graduate school and am searching for that next big life adventure so I have hesitated ot purchase my own share just yet, but definitely plan to for upcoming seasons.
