Keeping Chickens & Ceramic Eggs (Giveaway!!!)

I’m gearing up to teach another of my “Backyard Chickens” classes at our local community college, AB-Tech, tonight (there’s still a few spaces left, if any of you want to come!). Accordingly, I’ve got chickens on the brain.

This time of year is such a great time in the wide world of our fine feathered friends. Their plumage is nice and glossy, their combs and wattles are red and plump, they’re thrilled to be finding bugs available for the picking (pecking?), and some hens are going broody, ready to sit on a clutch of eggs. In short, the birds are living the good life!

When my flock is happy, I’m happy. As such, I’d like to offer one small measure reader a copy of my book, Keeping Chickens. I’m also including with the book a couple of brown ceramic eggs. More than simply decorative objects (if you’re into the whole poultry decor thing, that is), these eggs are incredibly handy to have around, for a variety of reasons.

Should you have a hen go broody, but don’t have a rooster in your flock (and therefore lack any fertile eggs), you can tuck these eggs under her. She can then continue to sit without doing so on eggs you’d rather be consuming yourself (that is, unless you want to discourage her broodiness, in which case you’ll need to block entry to the nesting box she’s been using).

These ceramic eggs can also be used should you ever have a problem with a member of your flock eating their own eggs. An attempted peck or two at the fake eggs is pretty much all it takes to discourage the nibbling interloper from continued action.

To enter the giveaway, simply leave a comment below. Be sure to leave a means of contacting you in your reply, either via your email address or through a link back to your own blog or website. I’ll run the giveaway through next Wednesday, April 18th, midnight EST. The giveaway is open to all residents of North America.

Whether you’re already a chicken tender(er), or hoping to get a wing up on the venture this year, here’s wishing you and your flock a world of food and fun!

UPDATE:The winner of my “Keeping Chickens” book and ceramic eggs giveaway is lucky #62, Sarah, of Frugal By Choice. Thank you so very much to everyone that entered, and props to you, Sarah!

Ohhhhh! I would love to win both your fabulous book and the ceramic eggs! We are getting 3 hens (1 blue cochin & 2 easter eggers) at the end of May to start our backyard chicken adventures in our teeny-tiny townhome backyard! Our 4 laying hens and the 8 new chicks in the brooder would appreciate my being able to refer to it without the aid of inter-library-loan!

  • Kathe Gray says:

My sister and I grew up with a little henhouse of our own. We sold our beautiful brown and speckled eggs to our grandmother's friends, door-to-door in her apartment building, and raised our Christmas shopping money by doing so.

Now that the city I live in has finally established by-laws that permit having a handful of layers on large enough lots, I'm ready to reawaken my little brood hen within — and teach my daughter the pleasures of collecting warm eggs.

Your book would be an indispensable part of our journey, as would the ceramic eggs.

  • amber says:

I cannot wait to keep my own chickens! Just looking for a little more space! In the meantime, I'd love to do my research and start with your book!

I used Canning and Preserving to stock my pantry. Thanks!

Ashely,I'm a founding member of C.O.O.P. (Chickens on our Property) over in Johnson City. COOP has been working hard since last July to get our city code amended to allow our residents to have backyard hens. I'd love to have your book to show our city council members when we go before them next month for round 3-yes, 3!If I show them the book, remind them how our nearest neighbor allows hens and remind them that the sky hasn't fallen in doing so, maybe it would have a much needed impact on them. Having a copy of your book on hand would be awesome to show at the various venues COOP is attending to drum up support for this proposed legislation. Help?? Thanks for all you do.

    bawk bawk!
Hi Ashley, sorry to miss your class tonight, I'm attending another chicken related workshop/tour actually. AND I had eggs for breakfast so I guess it's sort of a chicken kinda day all around. 😛 Would love to read your book and will one day soon regardless if I win it or not. We're getting bees next week and then chickens are up next on the list. I'm getting snagged on the coop design and actually number of chickens we should get… flip floppin' between 6 or 12 or 25! Hope all is well. Should I win, you can contact me on my facebook page. Meesh

Although we are going on our 3rd flock of chickens (due to moves) we never raised them from chicks before and during that process your book was an invaluable resource to us. Your book was given to us as a gift and we sincerely appreciate the advice contained within! My mother just got 12 chicks and this will be her first flock ever. Regardless of whether I win or not, I will be getting her your book for her, for mothers day. We've had several broody buffs so its good to know that ceramic eggs are an option!

Thanks so much for the chance to win your book! I would love to win it. We just joined 4-H and my kids and I really want to get some chickens! This book would help us out greatly!
    Thanks again!

I am absolutely obsessed with your books: Canning & Preserving, Keeping Bees, Home Dairy and Keeping Chickens. I've been checking them out from our local library one by one, Keeping Chickens being the last of the four and my favorite – such a great reference. I'm looking forward to more Ashley English books!

I want chickens sooooo badly! But, sadly, our it's against our city's rules.

We are working to change that.

I have just the broody hen for those eggs. Also, I would love to gift the book to a friend. Your book has been a tremendous resource for us. We used it in our first community chicken chat last night!

I just bought a house with a nice large back yard. I am trying to convince the husband that chickens are awesome, I think fresh eggs all the time is making him come to the dark side. :)
